Heartland Habitat for Humanity, Inc.
Location
Kansas City, KS
Mission
To build simple, decent homes and communities in Wyandotte, Johnson and Leavenworth Counties in Kansas, and Clay and Platte Counties in Missouri, in partnership with God’s people in need, while following biblical principles.
In-Fill Housing
Project summary
Heartland Habitat almost exclusively builds on in-fill lots where an existing structure once was, but has since been demolished. The challenge is finding a design and construction techniques that do not require extensive excavtion to hit "good" soil. Currently, we must dig down so far to hit "good" soil that we go ahead and put in a basement. Having a design that does not require a basement would allow us to build a less expensive house and thus serve more families.

Increasing sustainability
Project summary
Heartland Habitat currently builds all new homes to Energy Star standards. Our challenge is to continue to build an even more energy efficient and sustainable home while keeping costs down during construction. Most importantly, we must keep short and long term maintenance costs down for our homeowners.
